A new book by Australian writer Charles Happell offers readers a new perspective on the famous Kokoda campaign during World War II. The Bone Man of Kokoda tells the true story of a Japanese soldier, Kokichi Nishimura, who was a member of Japan's 144th Regiment and among those involved in the battle against Australian forces in New Guinea and its capital, Port Moresby. Of the 56 men in his company, Nishimura alone survived the brutal 15-day campaign. Nishimura promised his fallen comrades he would return to collect them and bring them home. The Bone Man of Kokoda is an amazing account of how he kept his word.
