Some are examples of the best in advanced engineering; others evoke Japan before its modernisation. The character for &quot;bridge&quot;, read as &quot;bashi&quot; or &quot;hashi&quot;, usually follows the proper name of the bridge (although at times it is expressed as &quot;kyo&quot;). The supports are buried in the riverbed, so as to withstand the strong current of the river. The bridge dates back to the 17th century, but has been rebuilt several times.
