From October 22-28 Japan's national television broadcaster, NHK, is once again hosting its international contest for educational content - the Japan Prize. The contest has sought to bring together educational and cultural programs of the highest production and artistic quality from around the world. NHK first held the Japan Prize in 1965, with the aim of helping to raise the quality of the content of educational programs and to foster international understanding and cooperation. The contest has been a source of motivation and hope for people everywhere involved in the production of media with educational content. Educational media is increasingly digitalising due to the proliferation of the internet, computer games and digital television broadcasting. In recognition of this shift, the scope of this year's contest has been widened to include educational content that uses audio visual and interactive learning as wll as educational television programs. In addition to receiving a financial prize, the winner of each category will be promoted on NHK television and have their work sent to the "Japan Show" video libraries in various locations around the world.
